Loved it。 I had already read his first book and it was great。 It was a few years ago, and at the time I might have not realized, but now looking back it really was the start to open my mind to a different mindset to deal with depression (which was my biggest problem) and anxiety。I highlighted the book with different colours and plan to use it as a guide for various problems I might have。 Remember to open the book and search for the sections I highlighted。But even if I don't, the book was an amaz Loved it。 I had already read his first book and it was great。 It was a few years ago, and at the time I might have not realized, but now looking back it really was the start to open my mind to a different mindset to deal with depression (which was my biggest problem) and anxiety。I highlighted the book with different colours and plan to use it as a guide for various problems I might have。 Remember to open the book and search for the sections I highlighted。But even if I don't, the book was an amazing tool to solidify the ideas and techniques he had present in the first book。So, since the ideas weren't new, I went into this book already knowing what to expect and chose to read the sections in the order I deemed most priority for me, and skipped the medication section。I highly recommend this book, maybe the other one first, if someone wants to change their mindset and be able to improve themselves into a version which can better handle different situations, from communication, depression, procrastination, phobias and anxiety 。。。more

Skipped around the book, used some of the worksheets。 Pretty helpful。 Felt like I already knew a lot of it。 But good for re-training unhealthy thinking patterns

Don't be intimidated by the size of this book。 A number of the pages are simply blanks and spaces for you to work on exercises that Burns is suggesting, and the back half is full of information on medication。 As I am not looking to go on medication at this time, I did not read this section。I bought this item used for a couple bucks, and it was an updated 1999 edition。The positives: This is a great beginner's or refresher course on cognitive therapy for anxiety and depression。 The exercises do wo Don't be intimidated by the size of this book。 A number of the pages are simply blanks and spaces for you to work on exercises that Burns is suggesting, and the back half is full of information on medication。 As I am not looking to go on medication at this time, I did not read this section。I bought this item used for a couple bucks, and it was an updated 1999 edition。The positives: This is a great beginner's or refresher course on cognitive therapy for anxiety and depression。 The exercises do work, at least some of them, and there is some variety of exercises presented so if one doesn't work for you personally, you can always try another。 I do not regret spending a couple bucks on this, it was a helpful reminder of things I've learned before and I found significant benefit to doing exercises even when I was doubtful。Negatives: First, this book is very dated feeling。 Now, it is an "updated" edition of a book that was more than ten years old in 1999, and it is now 20 years after that re-release; surely some of this is not the author's fault but mine for providing a review of a book that is from an earlier era。 The author has since released "Feeling Great," another book on these topics and one which may well address my issues with this book。 However, many of the ways examples are told feel fake and cliched in a way that feels a lot more like 1980s self-help writing than 1999 in tone and style, and a ton of it is focused on typical husband-wife spousal relationship problems as they might be imagined three or more decades ago; if that is relevant to you, you may have more to gain from this book than I did。Second, I personally found the section on interpersonal communication unhelpful and ineffective。 My own experience is that validating what other people are saying and assuming there is "some truth" in anything a person says to you gets poor results。 Maybe I am just too resistant to this mode of thinking and being unfair to Burns, but I really don't think so。 Empathy is valuable when having disagreements, but I am not sure this is the way to get there at least for me。 YMMV。 I think the value of the book is in addressing your negative thought patterns and writing down what the issues are, not so much in learning new interpersonal skills。 。。。more

Use this book with other self help books on communication。 I read it, but feel like I can't give it an honest review without existences work on the techniques in here。 You have decided for yourself if these techniques work。 Use this book with other self help books on communication。 I read it, but feel like I can't give it an honest review without existences work on the techniques in here。 You have decided for yourself if these techniques work。 。。。more

First, this book is really out of date。 I don't understand most of the analogies or wording。 Second, this book might not be for everyone。 Like myself, you might not find this useful。 As an example, I can't argue with that inner voice。 I had to learn to modulate the voice。 To change where it's coming from and how it sounds。 Imagine a bully being mean to you; in that imagination you can change their voice into Mickey Mouse。 Not so bad, right? One of those books that deserves to be purchased, marked up, and referred to often。 Took me a long time to get to it and finish it, but very well worth the effort。

This is very similar to "Feeling Good" but with a greater focus on anxiety。It also has some material on improving communication。The part that I found the most interesting were the chapters at the end with tips for therapists。 It was interesting to see the other side of the couch! I read the first draft of this book for a class during my divinity/ministry training。 I read the second edition as an educator, parent, husband, and very imperfect person。 No, it hasn’t made me perfect。 But I still found this book an invaluable tool for interrogating and retraining thinking (and communication practices) that creates problems, rather than solving them (it’s bibliotherapy in the cognitive-based therapy, or CBT, tradition)。 A book that really stuck with me the first time I read it I read the first draft of this book for a class during my divinity/ministry training。 I read the second edition as an educator, parent, husband, and very imperfect person。 No, it hasn’t made me perfect。 But I still found this book an invaluable tool for interrogating and retraining thinking (and communication practices) that creates problems, rather than solving them (it’s bibliotherapy in the cognitive-based therapy, or CBT, tradition)。 A book that really stuck with me the first time I read it (around 25 years ago), and did not disappoint the second time around。 。。。more

I found this book extremely insightful。 This is a self-help book, usually intended for someone struggling from longstanding and tough emotions and feelings, such as depression, guilt, anger, stress, anxiety, relationship trouble etc。 However, I feel this book is a good-read for anyone and everyone who is proactive about mental health and wishes not to become victim of his/her own thoughts。 The book points out common distortions in thought that each one of us is vulnerable to in the face of tough I found this book extremely insightful。 This is a self-help book, usually intended for someone struggling from longstanding and tough emotions and feelings, such as depression, guilt, anger, stress, anxiety, relationship trouble etc。 However, I feel this book is a good-read for anyone and everyone who is proactive about mental health and wishes not to become victim of his/her own thoughts。 The book points out common distortions in thought that each one of us is vulnerable to in the face of tough situations, societal influences and our own conditioning that we go through as a result of our upbringing and the people we come in contact with。 These cognitive distortions are self-defeating and result into suffering and pain。The book provides multiple practical ways in which one can notice these distortions and replace them with more rational responses。 Some of these ways are journaling based where you would note down the thought that is bringing you down, notice the distortion in it and replace it with a rational response。 This method over time results into replacing the distorted thoughts with the rational ones and thereby reducing the suffering。 Some of the cognitive distortions mentioned in the book are - All or nothing thinking (eg。- My whole effort has gone to waste。), Personalization (eg。 I'm responsible for that mishap。), Labelling (eg。 I'm a loser。), Emotional reasoning (eg。 I feel like a waste, so I must be one。), Should Statements (eg。 I should be productive。), Mental Filter (eg。 There is no good in the world。) etc。 The book is filled with stories about people who have applied these methods and gained substantial result。 It also contains, in a very structured and easy-to-implement way, other strategies (such as - disarming other person through agreement, empathy and self-love, sticking to your guns and being assertive in the face of tough conversations, getting to the bottom of the thoughts) that one can implement and thereby find stability in the midst of turbulent and energy-draining emotions。As someone who has been practicing mindfulness meditation and awareness from few years, I found the book an excellent source of common pitfalls in the usually benign-looking thoughts。 This book and the mindfulness practice complement each other for me and provide a more practical way to keep a smile and sanity in this fast-paced, competitive and overwhelming corporate rat-race。 。。。more

This is many years old, but I have found this to be the best self-help book I have ever read AND ACTUALLY USED to help with my depression。 It made sense and when I actually did the exercises it taught me better ways to cope and ways to make self-talk more positive。

This book is ideal for someone wanting to better understand themselves。 It requires a lot of choosing to self-reflect and one must try extra hard to not be stubborn when performing the exercises required in this book to have any sort of growth/change in habits moving forward。

This is the kinda basic stuff that everyone should learn about throughout elementary school。So, if you didn't, this is one of those books you should definitely read。。。 less you read something similar, or took college level courses of human development and basic psychology。Readers can also skip over the last half of the book, less they need to know everything there is to know about anti-anxiety or anti-depression meds。。。 This means the primary book is only about 380pgs, IIRC。 This is the kinda basic stuff that everyone should learn about throughout elementary school。So, if you didn't, this is one of those books you should definitely read。。。 less you read something similar, or took college level courses of human development and basic psychology。Readers can also skip over the last half of the book, less they need to know everything there is to know about anti-anxiety or anti-depression meds。。。 This means the primary book is only about 380pgs, IIRC。 。。。more

punchable faces。 。。。more
